Project News

  • Its been a month of Saturdays since the last update.
During that time development has went along well.

A few things have been decided that I wanted to share.
    * We have developed and odd/even unstable/stable model for release numbers. Hopefully this will help you pick the version you are most comfortable with running on your network.
    * We have skipped the 0.2 release, as we saw that many things would need a major overhaul to get to a stable point.
    * We have decided that Fedora is no longer our target platform for development or deployment. There were a few major reasons that we have made this decision. The major issue is the Fedora Legacy project is closing down and that means that a Fedora release only gets updates for about a year(2 new Fedora versions). The other major reason for the switch is the size of a "minimal" install these days. It's huge and has far more services running than I am comfortable with. All this being said, we have switched our devel environment over to Ubuntu Server w/LTS(long term support). The long term support version will have updates for 6 years.
    * Stability and simplicity are the major goals for this release. A good deal of changes have already went in to help with this, such as web based configs. If you have any input about what you think needs simplified with Ungoliant, please drop us a line.

As we get closer to our release, we will post up more information about how things are progressing. If you have any comments or suggestions, feel free to drop us a line on the user or devel mailing lists.

  • We are not dead. We promise.

Shawn and I have set aside a time each week when we can do serious development work towards a new release. The reference implementation at the University of Indianapolis has gained many features, and we plan to generalize those and add a handful of others. The planned new features can be read via the new .plan link at the top of the page.

If anyone has any other suggested features, please post them in the forum or submit them to the ungoliant-devel mailing list. If you have had any issues installing or using Ungoliant, we'd love to hear about them via that list or ungoliant-users.

A hiatus of this length was not planned, but Real Life™ has been interfering. We're back in the saddle now, however, and quite excited about it...

  • Seems we had a bug in the ungoliant-0.1.tar.gz file. An incorrect comment delimiter was put in the ungoliant-0.1/etc/vmpsd.conf.header file. Please remove these lines:

; The following line must be modified if you intend to use anything but
; VLAN0001 as your default vlan (aka ungregistered vlan).

This should fix the problem with the vmps daemon starting up.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Release of Ungoliant 0.1 and Ungoliant Snort Sensor 0.1 is now up for download.

We also have mailing lists setup for general Ungoliant support and also an Ungoliant-devel list for anyone interested
in contributing to development. Both lists can be
    found here

Any bugs that are found can be reported through the
bug tracker. or through the Ungoliant-devel lists.

Thanks for your continued support and interest in Ungoliant!

  • We have had quite a few delays, but things are still moving along nicely. Screenshots of the interface will be posted sometime today or tomorrow.

  • Documentation is nearly complete. We are planning a final install test using our new documentation tomorrow to make sure we haven't forgotten anything vital. A release is scheduled for the *very* near future.

  • Things are progressing well and we are now at the documentation and package building phase. We will send out an email to everyone who signed up for updates as soon as the packages have been uploaded to SourceForge.

  • Things are moving steadily towards our first release. We've been held up longer than expected by some issues with the new version of OpenVMPS, and are waiting to have some basic style sheets written for the web interface (our current sheets are very UofI-specific, and would not suit most installations).

It has also, of course, been impossible to resist adding a few new features and cleaning up some of the back-end code while working towards this release. In the end, the release will come at a date later than originally anticipated, but the payoff should be a much more well-rounded and easier to use codebase and toolset.

Thanks for your patience, and please don't hesitate to sign up for the release alert list if you haven't done so already.
